What is SEO? And why does an Author need to know about it?

Y’all know that when it comes to tech stuff, I’m not the sharpest hook in the tackle box. Just figuring out the Facebook was a challenge. My dad always said, “You don’t have to be smart; just don’t be dumb, and try to surround yourself with smart people.”

The new look of my website is the result of my doing just that. A friend talked to me about SEO, but after telling me that SEO was an acronym for Search Engine Optimization, I became adrift. That’s a Marine term. We don’t get lost, but we do occasionally go adrift. So, I asked Kim if I could hire someone to do that and on her recommendation, I hired a tech company to build me an excellent and functioning website. I still don’t know what SEO is, but I do know what optimize means.

Before, the only way you could find my website was if you had a link or knew the url was www.waynestinnett.com. If you searched for my name on Google, you got a lot of results, but my website was way down on page twenty-four of those results. Page one was mostly links to my books on Amazon, which was great, but I wanted fans to be able to find my site.

Today, even if you misspell my name as Wyane Stinet, Google will correct it and my website will be the first search result. Not only that, but if you search for something like ‘books about Caribbean adventure,’ all my books are in a carousel at the top of the search results. Same with searching for ‘Caribbean thriller books’ or ‘Caribbean mystery books.’

Thank you, Kimberli Bindschatel, for trying to teach me what SEO is and how important it is, and for pointing me toward Debra Lanning with Lala Projects, my new web designer and webmaster.

Steering a business isn’t much different than steering a boat. Just get a good crew and keep it off the rocks.

  • Wayne, just saw a tweet about your blog post in SEO. Nice, quick, informative read.

I am a bit confused by the last paragraph…..I thought one pilots a boat rather than steers!
